In this lecture, I will introduce some of the key principles of inclusive and accessible communication practice, focusing on notable challenges and important considerations for equitable information sharing in diverse societies. I will pay particular attention to issues around gender-inclusive language, representations of disability, and the importance of accessible and culturally informed approaches to information sharing during crisis events. As a case study, I will also discuss some of the findings of my research surrounding migrant and refugees’ experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic in Australia. I will conclude with some recommendations (arising from my research) for improving crisis communication to better meet the diverse information sharing and support needs of multicultural communities.
Dr Ashleigh Haw (she/her) is a Senior Lecturer in Media and Communication at the University of Canberra. She specialises in advancing social inclusion in communication policy, advocacy, and practice, with a special interest in understanding how marginalised communities engage with (and are impacted by) media representation of their needs and experiences. Ashleigh’s most recent research uses Covid-19 as a case study to examine the social and health implications of racism, disability exclusion, and mis/disinformation during global crisis events; emphasising notable scholarly and policy implications at the intersections of sociology, social policy, and communication.
